Nachgefragt: Interview with Tripwire/ Indian Punk Band
![]() |
1. So you are now 7 years active as a Punkband. Your first gig was watched by two people. How is it today? Can you describe what happens on a „normal“ gig?
The gigs as as fun now as they where then, from the bands point of view we are three people having a blast on stage, trying out new things. I really don't have a clue about the feelings of the audience the only noticeable fact being that the crowds have increased in numbers and that there is increased awareness of our compositions, its easier now to have an audience sing out a chorus to your own song, we still have an odd bad show but as a band we love all of them. Given a live environment we like to be spontaneous. 7 years has sure been quite something to the excellent chemistry we share on/off stage. we are yet to have a normal gig, we just have the excellent ones or the bad ones there is no shade called grey.
2. How did you come together and how did you found out, that you like Punkrock?
India has not seen a rebellion, a movement, a revolution in ages, the last one being some 60 odd yrs ago. That's because people here are very tolerant. People don't have enough faith in their opinions. Compromise forms a part of your induction to society through the various streams of education and religion, with suicide being the traditional get away. The band members knew each other for a considerable period of time being regulars at the noticeable brawls, before actually getting down to music. The band was influenced by the punk bands in the west. However, we never really made a conscious decision to form a punk band, punk rock was actually what the audience associated the band with, because of the simple patterns, songwriting and based on what they saw at the live gigs.
3. You recorded your album in 2007. How easy or hard was it to get a rocksound on the recording?
Frankly we haven‘t really got a great sound on the first album. But at that point of time that was the best we could manage. We've been joined by a sound engineer(Dexter) who has now been growig with the band. The recordings now are much better than then. We have an album down... doesn‘t sound bad, has a booklet with lyrics and band info and a safe case to store it in and it serves as a good memory of the bands journey, you will see the improvement in the next album, but this is what we have of the first album. i definately love the first album and hope people share the view.
4. Why are you not singing in indian?
As we were formally educated in english and all of us have completed our schooling. Jokes apart: We would not like to limit ourselves to the confines of the country. Politics, nationality, regionalism is bullshit. Rock is a global form of expression, and the most widely accepted language is english.
5. Do you have any subculture or scene in Mumbai (or any other indian city) that supports you?
There is a subculture, I can't compare it to the other countries, as we've never been there. You can come down and find out for yourself, noted scenes are in the metros, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengalurru, Kolkatta, Pune etc.
6. What is Rock- (and especially Punk-) music for the indian culture? Is the society more open minded to a sound like yours or are your parents more irritated by the things you do?
Apart from our day jobs none of the band members make and effort to fit in to any culture. We take things as they come, with simple darwin theories.
7. How hard or easy is it to keep the band alive?
Its fairly hard as right now its not possible to sustain ourselves just by the earnings from the band. Which brings in challenges of being employed, which leads to time constrainst... and all that bla blah...
8. How is your view on the western Punk-/ Rockscene? Do you know anything about this music in a country like mine - Germany?
No, we'd love to know more, and we'd love to play there.
9. Can you tell us anything about the history of Indian Rockmusic? Is there any history?
You can search that up on the net there are a few forums/sites having information. I could guide you if your queston was more specific.
10. What are your plans for the future?
To make music.
