Nachgefragt: Interview with Demokhratia/ Algerian HC Punk band

1. When I checked you myspace-profile I didn‘t found any informations about you. Is this a principle? What informations can you give us about the band and the people behind the band?

Yes, it’s a principle we choose to stay officially anonym to avoid eventual problems because of our free speaking.

2. How did your band started and what are the conditions for the band in Algeria?

The band started in 2007. We are two friend in the band. We decided to create an anonym band and record the first Algerian HC punk. The goal of the band was to do something where we can speak freely, no gigs, no official members, only records and myspace, after putting the songs on the myspace the feedback was really good.

Now we started to practice with two other friend and we try to organize a concert and play with a pseudonym.

3. Why do you play hardcore? How did it infect you?

As I said we are two friend. We met 10 years ago. We were listening to metal music and we were always looking for more extreme music. Few years ago we discovered Hardcore and power violence and we have understood that HARDCORE is what we went to do and what we can do, hardcore opened our minds and we found on it a real way of expression and we think that the hardcore music is one of the music style who stayed pure, who resisted to industrialisation and conformism.

4. Is it just music for you or also a way of life?

Here we can’t talk about a way of life because no one chose his way of life. Especially when you do something like extreme music the people are not habituate to alternative culture.

5. When I listened to you songs I thought they were about frustration and anger, but for sure I don‘t understand the lyrics. So: What are your songs about?

We talk about all what goes wrong in our society and world system just the title “BLED EL PETROL TAKOUL LEKHRA” means a petrol country eats shit, we talk about extremism in the religion, how the government fucks us, corruption, the blindness of people and a lot of other things .

6. I know about a few metal bands from algeria. Can you tell us something about the scene and the people that surrounds you?

Actually almost all people doesn’t make the difference between rock, metal or punk for them, we are just young Occidentalize Algerians who make noise, people around us support what we do and appreciate our concepts and the fact that we sing in Algerian language.

7. How did you get in contact with Luk of TAM89, who will release a 7“ with you?

He saw our myspace, he appreciate our music, he send us a mail looking how can he buy our release, we told we have no release he proposes to release us and we were happy, because we really like what he do for punk.

What can we expect?

You can expect the first Algerian hardcore punk records.

9. I know about several cases of censorship in arabic countries against metal bands and fans. There was for example the well known case of Reborn, Necrosis and Infected brain in morocco or some other not so popular in Egypt and Iran. Do you have any problems with censorship? Is it a topic for you?

No, it’s not the same in Algeria. In Algeria you can say what you want, but you have to expect all kind of reaction. First from the people and then from the government. You can be ignored or you can be beaten, you must know that in Algeria you can be jailed if you draw a caricature of the president… unless we don’t do lot of noise and we don’t hamper the generals and the rich men to get more rich no one will give a shit about us.

10. What does it mean all in all to be young and fan of this kind of music you do in Algeria?

Feel like we are aliens and make us ask why it was never did before.

11. What do you expect from the future? And what do you expect from the rich western HC/ Punks and/ or normal people?

From the future, lot of other Algerian punk bands.

From western HC….to appreciate our music and support us and try to come and play here with us or invite us to play with them.
